WordTutor: Vocabulary Instruction
for non-native English speakers

THE PROBLEM

In India, students belonging to rural backgrounds face difficulty in adjusting to a new environment, due to a weak English vocabulary. The bilinguals have lower receptive and expressive English vocabulary than their monolingual peers, leading to confidence and contentment issues.

THE SOLUTION

We aimed to identify problems students face in learning oral English, and systematically solving them through a conversational solution, using Voice User Interface technology. We built an Alexa skill that helps students learn words by tapping into context, relevance, and usage.

THE IMPACT

We were able to have a proof-of-concept prototype in time to submit an entry for the Student Design Consortium at IndiaHCI 2018. At the conference, we had the privilege to present the concept to esteemed academicians and industry experts, and we won the "Best Presentation" award.
